MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo women's basketball team earned a, 67-62, win over in-state foe West Alabama inside of Central State Bank Arena on Thursday evening.
Elisa Saffold led the way with 21 points, while
Aubrey Sorrells scored 12 and
Julia Susla added nine.
Ramie Reid opened the game hot, scoring the first six Falcon points, as Montevallo trailed, 7-6, at the 5:58 mark.
Elisa Saffold scored the next two baskets for the Falcons, as UWA held on to its one-point advantage, 11-10, at the 4:10 mark. After a UWA bucket, a lay-in from
Anna Katherine Eastman and a
Savannah Cook triple put Montevallo ahead, 15-13, with 1:27 left. The Tigers drained a three pointer in the final minute to take a, 16-15, lead at the end of the first quarter.
Saffold opened the second quarter with a pair of free throws and a lay-in to put Montevallo ahead, 19-16. After a UWA lay-in,
Jerrilyn Richardson connected from long range to put the Falcons ahead, 22-18, at the 8:04 mark. Both teams traded a pair of baskets, as a
Lia Edwards lay-in put Montevallo up, 26-22, at the 4:34 mark.
Julia Susla added a lay-in to extend the Falcon lead to, 28-23, with 3:56 left. Sorrells added a lay-in two minutes later and Susla closed the half with a pair of free throws in the final seconds, as Montevallo took a, 32-27, lead at the break.
Both teams scored a pair of baskets to open the half, before the Tigers scored four-straight to cut the Falcon lead to one, 34-33, at the 5:35 mark. Montevallo responded with a 10-0 run, as a Sorrells lay-in put the Falcons up by double digits, 44-33, with 2:47 left. The Tigers halted the run with a lay-in, but Edwards cashed in on a lay-in of her own, as UM held a, 46-35, advantage at the 1:33 mark. The Tigers knocked in a pair of free throws in the final minute, as Montevallo took a, 46-37, lead into the fourth quarter.
West Alabama opened the fourth quarter with a 6-0 run, cutting the Montevallo lead to one possession, 46-43, at the 8:01 mark.
Jerrilyn Richardson responded with a lay-in, before the Tigers cashed in on an and-one, as UM held a, 48-46, advantage. A Saffold triple and a Sorrells lay-in extended the Montevallo lead back out to seven, 53-46, at the 6:17 mark. Both teams traded points, as a Richardson three pointer kept Montevallo up by seven, 58-51, with 4:59 left. The Tigers knocked down four consecutive free throws, but a jumper from Saffold gave Montevallo a, 60-55, advantage at the 2:53 mark. The next basket would come with 56 seconds, as the Tigers connected on a lay-in, making it a one possession game. Susla provided the response for Montevallo, cashing in on a lay-in of her own to put the Falcons ahead, 62-57, with 32 seconds left. The Tigers responded with a three pointer, but four consecutive free throws from Sorrells and Saffold gave Montevallo a six-point lead, 66-60, with 11 seconds left, ultimately putting the game away. The Falcons secured the 67-62 victory, to stay in the number eight spot in the GSC with three games left on the schedule.
