PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Montevallo women's basketball team fell to West Florida 80-53 at UWF Field House on Thursday.
Anna Katherine Eastman led the way with 14 points, while
Lia Edwards scored 13 points.
Montevallo struck first, as
Julia Susla scored a jumper on the first UM possession. The Argos scored a pair of buckets, but five straight points from
Anna Katherine Eastman put the Falcons ahead, 7-4, at the 7:47 mark.
Ramie Reid cashed in on a lay-in, but the Argos outscored the Falcons 8-2 to take a, 12-9, advantage at the 4:53 mark. Montevallo responded with a 7-0 run capped by a Susla lay-in, as UM pulled ahead, 16-12, with 1:49 left. The Argos halted the run with a lay-in, but back-to-back baskets from
Lia Edwards and
Savannah Cook, put Montevallo ahead, 20-13. West Florida connected from long range in the final seconds, as UM took a, 20-16, lead at the end of the first quarter.
Edwards opened the second quarter with a jumper and Eastman fired a triple a minute later, as Montevallo jumped out to a seven-point advantage, 25-18, at the 7:28 mark. The Argos responded with a 7-0 run to tie the game at 25 with 5:10 left.
Jerrilyn Richardson halted the UWF run with a free throw, but a three-pointer from the Argos put UWF in front, 28-26, at the 4:38 mark.
Elisa Saffold scored the next five points for the Falcons, as UM regained the lead, 31-30, with 1:19 left. The Argos closed the half with the last three points to take a, 33-31, lead at the break.
The Argos took control in the third quarter, using a 19-0 run to take a, 52-31, advantage at the 3:05 mark.
Anna Katherine Eastman fired a triple for the first basket for UM and
Julia Susla followed that up with another bucket, as UWF led, 52-36, with 1:54 left. Reid added a lay-in and Eastman cashed in on a free throw in the final two minutes, but the Argos took a commanding, 60-39, lead at the end of the third quarter.
Aubrey Sorrells opened the fourth quarter with a pair of free throws, before another Argo run put UWF up, 68-41, at the 7:32 mark. Eastman scored the first UM field goal of the fourth quarter at the 6:02 mark and
Lia Edwards added a lay-in two minutes later, as UWF held a, 74-47, lead with 4:06 left. Both teams scored six points in the final minutes, as UWF took home the 80-53 victory.
