VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Montevallo women's basketball team closed the regular season on Saturday afternoon, falling to Valdosta State, 54-44, at The Complex.
Anna Katherine Eastman led the way in scoring with 12 points, while
Aubrey Sorrells recorded her third double-double of the season, totaling 11 points and ten rebounds.
The Falcons stuck first, as
Ramie Reid opened the game with a lay-in. Reid added a free-throw a minute later, but the Blazers jumped out to a, 9-3, advantage at the 6:51 mark. Eastman responded with a bucket, and a pair of layups from
Lia Edwards and
Aubrey Sorrells tied the game, 9-9, at the 5:15 mark. The Blazers closed the quarter with a 7-0 run, taking a, 16-9, lead at the end of the first quarter.
Savannah Cook opened the second quarter with a three-pointer, but the Blazers went on a 17-0 run through the next six minutes, taking a, 33-12, lead at the 3:22 mark. Montevallo responded with a 10-0 run of its own, highlighted by a pair of baskets from Eastman to cut the deficit to, 33-22, with 1:13 left. The Blazers cashed in on a layup in the final minute to take a, 35-22, lead at the break.
Reid opened the scoring in the second half, with a layup in the opening minute. The next Falcon bucket, cut the deficit back down to single digits, as an Eastman tiple cut the VSU lead to, 36-27, at the 6:39 mark. The Blazers responded with a triple, but Sorrells cashed in on a lay-in, as VSU led, 39-29, at the 5:59 mark. The Blazers built separation, going on a 6-0 run through the next four minutes to pull ahead, 45-29, with 1:57 left.
Julia Susla halted the run with a jumper, but the Blazers closed the quarter with a triple, as VSU took a, 48-31, advantage at the end of the third quarter.
Montevallo opened the fourth quarter strong, as a 10-2 run, capped by a Susla lay-in and a pair of free throws from
Jerrilyn Richardson, cut the deficit to, 50-40, at the 4:45 mark. The Blazers responded with back-to-back buckets to pull ahead, 54-40, with 2:34 left. Edwards cashed in on a pair of free throws and Sorrells scored a jumper in the final two minutes, but the Blazers went on to take home the 54-44 victory to close the regular season.
