NASHVILLE, Tn. – The No. 17 University of Montevallo baseball team drops game one of their Gulf South Conference series against Trevecca Nazarene, 5-2, on Friday, Feb. 28. With the loss, Montevallo is now 9-7 with a 4-3 record in GSC play. The Trojans betters their record to 5-9 and 3-4 in conference play.
It was the Falcons who struck early to take the lead in the first inning after an RBI single off the bat of
Logan Harbin.
Connor Crowson led off the inning with a single and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Daniel Irizarry. On the hit by Harbin, Crowson scored by
McGwire Turner was thrown out trying to score. Trevecca Nazarene immediately responded with a single and a two-run homer in the bottom of the first. The Trojans tacked on an extra run as they scored on an error.
After a double by
McGwire Turner to lead off the third inning,
Jackson Webster drove him home with a two out single through the right side of the infield. The Trojans struck again as they would score on another Falcon miscue on defense in the fourth. Trevecca would hit their second home run of the game in the fifth as they took a 5-2 lead.
Montevallo would have the lead off man aboard in the sixth and seventh, but good pitching by the Trojans would retire the next three Falcons in both innings. The Falcons had their best opportunity to come back with first and second with one out in the eighth. Crowson picked up his third hit of the game with a single to the outfield, but the runner from second would get thrown out at home. TNU would close things out in the top of the ninth to take the 1-0 series lead going into tomorrow's double-header.
Adiel Melendez was great for the Falcons on the bump as he threw a career-high 7.1 innings and had his first career outing where he allowed no walks in a start. Melendez notched his fourth consecutive outing with five or more strikeouts. He faced the minimum in innings two and three. The Miami, Florida native now leads the Gulf South Conference with 30 innings pitched this season. Melendez has the third most strikeouts in the GSC with 26 and is tied for the third lowest batting average against at .200.
Sam Patrick came in the eighth and got the final two outs on the mound for the Falcons.
