Curry's Explosive Second Half Leads Falcons to 81-70 Win Over CBU

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Montevallo moves to 15-8 overall and 11-6 in Gulf South Conference action after defeating Christian Brothers, 81-70, on Saturday afternoon.
 
In the opening four minutes, Montevallo jumped out to an 11-2 lead with four early points from Tyson Sexton before Camden Andrews marked the fifth Falcon to score with a finish at the rim with 15:52 on the clock. Montevallo continued its hot start with a wide open three from Andrews in the corner that gave the Falcons a 16-7 lead. Brandon Fussell extended Montevallo's advantage to 12 before the Bucs went on a 7-0 run to make the score 19-14 with 12:10 to go. Fussell ended the run before a pair of free throws gave the sophomore 10 points in the first 10 minutes. The Falcons pushed the lead out to 32-16 with an 11-0 run that featured five points from junior Derek Moore. Aidan Gardiner tallied his first of seven points in the first half with 6:05 left before capping another 11-0 UM spurt with an old-fashioned three-point play with 2:16 to go. Jaylen Curry's first three of the game gave Montevallo its largest lead of the half at 45-22 before the Bucs scored five straight to end the half with Montevallo leading 45-27.
 
In the first three minutes of the second half, Christian Brothers sparked an 11-2 run than sliced Montevallo's advantage to 47-38 and bring the Bucs back within single digits. A post finish from Moore on the following Falcon possession ended the run before back-to-back buckets from Curry stretched the Falcons lead out to 53-40 with 15:35 on the clock. The Bucs responded with another big scoring run that trimmed the lead down to just 55-52 with 10:35 left to play.  On the next UM possession, Curry nailed a three for the Falcons first of the half before adding a second just over a minute later to give Montevallo some breathing room at 61-54. With 5:57 remaining, Fussell knocked down a three from the wing before Andrews finished at the rim to give the Falcons a 70-60 advantage. CBU battled back to pull within four before Gardiner went 3-of-4 from the line after a pair of offensive boards for the Australian. Back-to-back threes from Moore and Curry ended the game on a 9-1 Montevallo run and gave the Falcons an 81-70 win.

  • Montevallo was led by Jaylen Curry who finished with 22 points on 9-of-17 shooting and 4-of-9 from deep with 15 points coming in the second half.
  • Brandon Fussell finished with 15 points on 3-of-6 from deep while Derek Moore and Aidan Gardiner each scored 12.
  • Tyson Sexton led the Falcons on the glass with six rebounds while adding seven points.
  • Montevallo won the rebounding battle by a slim 35-34 margin with the Falcons owing points in the paint, 38-34.
  • Montevallo took care of the ball with just eight turnovers while scoring 15 points on 13 CBU turnovers.
