Four Homeruns Not Enough Against No. 1 Tampa

Box Score MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo baseball team falls in game two of their series against No. 1 Tampa, 6-7, on Saturday, Feb. 8. Both teams battled back and fourth as the game saw three ties and five lead changes.
 
For the sixth consecutive game, Montevallo played from an early deficit as Tampa smacked a two out RBI double to right center to go up 1-0. The Falcons immediately tied the game up as Connor Crowson hit the first pitch he saw for a lead off solo homer. The Spartans would add two runs with more two out magic as they singled home an RBI to make it 2-1. After a stolen base, Tampa would pull a ball down the right field line to double home the runner from second.
 
Ethan Huddleston would connect with his second homer of the season to start the second inning. This would be the second consecutive inning that UM would hit a lead-off homer. Falcon starter Zach Wyatt would fire a scoreless top of the third to keep the Falcons within one. Montevallo would take the lead in the bottom half of the third. Logan Harbin started the inning with a single up the middle. McGwire Turner blasted his first long ball of the season to put the Falcons on top 4-3.
 
Trey Felker came on in relief and was able to get out of a bases loaded, two out jam as he induced a weak ground out where McGwire Turner stepped on second to end the Spartan threat. In the top of the fifth, Tampa connected with a solo shot to tied the game at 4-4. A couple batters later, the Spartans struck again with two outs with a double into the right center gap to take the 6-4 lead.
 
In the bottom of the seventh, Montevallo would hit their third home run to lead-off an inning as Landon Leake hit his first of the season to left center. With a runner on second with two out, Jackson Webster came up clutch as he singled to center to score Logan Harbin which tied the game at 6-6. Tampa would score an unearned run in the top of the eighth with a sacrifice fly which was the equalizer in the game.
 
Mason Creacy was outstanding in his two innings of relief as he would go two full innings and would only allow one base runner while he struck out two. In the bottom of the ninth, the Falcons would go 1-2-3 against the Tampa closer to event he series up at 1-1.

GAME NOTES
  • The Falcons homered four times in the game which brings their season total to 14. UM leads the Gulf South Conference with that mark and it is twice as much as the second-place team.
  • Connor Crowson hit his GSC-leading third homer of the season.
  • McGwire Turner and Landon Leake connect with their first long balls of the season. Turner led the team with two hits today.
  • Ethan Huddleston went deep for the second time this season.
  • Seth Gurr had a great relief outing as he went 2.1 innings, gave up one unearned run and struck out one.
  • Mason Creacy added his second scoreless outing of the season as he pitched two innings, only allowed one base runner via walk and he struck out two.

For the second week in a row, the Falcons will host winner-take-all rubber game on Sunday, Feb. 9. Gino Cozzi will take the ball for the Falcons. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. CT at Kermit A. Johnson Field at Bob Riesener Stadium.
