Chalut's Game Winner Makes History as Falcons Top No. 9 UIndy

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – For the first time in program history, Montevallo men's lacrosse knocked off No. 9 UIndy, 13-12, on the road on Saturday afternoon.

UIndy drew first blood off an early Montevallo turnover but Matthew Boas knotted the game at 1-1 with a man-up goal at the 12:10 mark. Montevallo keeper Alex Egorshin tallied a pair of his 14 saves on the day but the Greyhounds score a pair of unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead with 5:18 on the clock. With 2:48 to go, John Spaans cut the lead down to one but a late goal from the ninth-ranked team in the land left UM in a 4-2 hole heading to the second.

After two more Egorshin saves, UIndy extended its lead with the first goal of the second quarter before Nick Givens finally ended the run with 10:02 left in the first half. The Greyhounds stretched the lead out to 7-3 with back-to-back goals before adding another with just 2:16 left in the half. With 1:39 left, Boas found the back of the net off a pass from Zach Reed before answering another UIndy goal in the final minute to send the game to the break with UIndy on top 9-5.

The Falcons responded well to open the second half with a Spaans goal in the opening minute before Caden Chalut tallied his first of four second-half goals with 13:22 on the clock. UIndy pushed its lead out to 11-7 with a pair of goals but William Angus kept the Falcons within striking distance with 6:54 left. Chalut beat the Greyhound keeper just 40 seconds later to cut the lead down to two. Following Ryan Andrews lone goal of the day, Chalut took advantage of a UIndy penalty to tie the game at 11-11 with just under four minutes left in the third. Egorshin added two more saves before Aaron Tichinoff gave Montevallo its first lead of the day at 12-11 with just 1:27 left. The Greyhounds answered in the final minute to send the game to the fourth in a 12-12 tie.

Both defenses held strong for the first 14 minutes of the fourth quarter with Egorshin recording three saves and the crossbar keeping the Falcons' hopes alive with just 2:32 to play. Off a UIndy turnover in the offensive third, Montevallo successfully cleared the ball down the field where Chalut picked up one of his two ground balls of the day. With just 49 seconds remaining, the junior attacker scored the game-winning goal to beat No. 9 UIndy for the first time.
