MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo men's lacrosse fell to No. 12 Maryville, 12-11, in the second home overtime game in Montevallo program history.
Both defenses were stingy for the first half of the first quarter with
Alex Egorshin recording his first of 19 saves at the 7:37 mark. The Hoover, Ala. native added another pair of saves before
Matthew Boas broke the ice with 5:03 left in the quarter. The 12
th ranked Saints scored goals on back-to-back possessions to hold a 2-1 lead heading into the second.
Montevallo killed a penalty to open the second quarter with another Egorshin stop but the Saints took a 3-1 lead just over a minute later.
Jacob Obee found the back of the net off a pass from freshman
Aidan Collery to bring the Falcons back within one at 3-2 with 10:28 in the half. Collery found the mark to answer a Maryville goal with an unassisted effort at the 6:10 mark. The Saints took advantage of a Montevallo penalty to go up 5-3 with just under five minutes left in the half. Egorshin added two more saves to his ledger before
Michael Howkins score in the final two minutes to send the game to the half with Montevallo trailing 5-4.
At the 10:35 mark of the third quarter, Boas scored his second of the day to answer an opening goal from Maryville and make the score 6-5 MU. Egorshin continued his stellar afternoon with another pair of saves before Boas completed his hat trick to tie the game at 6-6 with 6:49 left in the third. Maryville regained control with a pair of unanswered goals before
John Spaans cut the lead down to one with a goal at the 2:41 mark. Both backlines stood tall to end the third and send the game to the fourth with MU leading 8-7.
Howkins knotted the score at 8-8 in the first minute of the fourth quarter on a man-up chance before the Saints stretched the lead out to two with back-to-back goals. With 12:12 remaining, Chalut brought the Falcons back within one on an assist for
Aaron Tichonoff before
John Spaans tied the game at 10 apiece with 10:51 to go. With 7:55 left,
John Morris went coast-to-coast to give Montevallo just its second lead of the day. Maryville tied it back up with just 6:35 on the clock. The Falcons saw four chances to win in regulation but missed the mark three times and were denied with just 55 seconds to go to send the game to overtime in an 11-11 deadlock.
Montevallo saw the first possession of overtime but a costly turnover left Montevallo without a shot in extra time. Egorshin added his 19
th save of the day on the first Maryville shot of overtime but the Saints would end the game just 2:26 into overtime with a golden goal that gave Montevallo a 12-11 loss.
