17 Falcons Score in 25-8 Win Over Malone

CANTON, OHIO – Montevallo men's lacrosse improved to 8-3 on the second after the No. 19 Falcons took a dominant 25-8 win over Malone on Wednesday afternoon.
 
The Falcons jumped out to a two-goal lead in the opening five minutes with goals from Nick Givens and Matthew Boas before the Pioneers tied the game midway through the first with a pair of unanswered goals. Malone continued its push with another pair of goals over the next two minutest to take a 4-2 lead at the 5:02 mark. Off a MU turnover, Aaron Tichonoff found the back of the net with 2:36 to go to pull the Falcons back within one. Junior goalkeeper Alex Egorshin tallied back-to-back saves to kill a Montevallo penalty in the final minute to send the game to the second with Montevallo trailing 4-3.
 
Again, Montevallo got out to a hot start with a Samuel Martin goal in the first 30 seconds of the second before Tichonoff added his second of the day just 49 seconds later to give UM a 5-4 advantage. Malone would tie the game at five apiece but two goals from Michael Howkins quickly regained UM's lead. Senior attack Jacob Obee found his first goal of the game at the 9:35 mark off an assist from Matthew Boas. Christopher Humphrey and Jake Travis scored the final goals of the half before Egorshin recorded three stops to send the game to the half with Montevallo on top 10-5.
 
Malone cut Montevallo's lead down to 11-7 early in the second half but quick goals from John Spaans, Ryan Andrews and Boas led Montevallo to a 14-7 lead at the 10:15 mark. Egorshin would add three more saves before Martin and Jake Travis score just 51 seconds apart to push the lead out to nine with 6:09 to play. Boas found his second goal of the quarter with 5:31 on the clock to give Montevallo a 17-7 lead and end a 7-1 UM run.
 
Freshman Matthew Egorshin opened the fourth-quarter scoring with his first of the day before William Angus found the mark to give Montevallo a 19-7 advantage with 11:56 to play. Montevallo would score three goals in just 1:54 with shots from Adam Bryant, Matthew Egorshin and Morgan Trites to extend Montevallo's lead to 24-7. Jonah Brooking punctuated the victory in the final minute to give Montevallo its 25-7 road win over Malone.

  • The Falcons set a new season-high with 71 shots on the day which marks the most in a single game since Montevallo took 73 against Shorter on April 19, 2019.
  • Montevallo's 62 ground balls in the road win are the second most in a single game this season and the most since Feb. 7 when the Falcons picked up 64.
  • The Falcons' 25 goals are the second most in a game this year with the Falcons' 37 points marking the third most this season.
  • Montevallo's 25 goals came from 17 different Falcons with six Falcons scoring at least two goals.
  • Matthew Boas led UM's attack with four goals while adding an assist for a game-high five points.
  • Alex Egorshin tallied double-digit saves for the sixth-consecutive game with 14 saves on 30 shots faced and just eight goals allowed.
