CLEVELAND, TN – The University of Montevallo baseball team drops game one of their GSC series against Lee, 1-3, on Friday, Mar. 28. With the loss, Montevallo is now 17-15 and 9-10 inside GSC play. Lee improves to 18-14 and 10-9 in the GSC.
The Falcons were locked in another Friday night pitchers duel as Montevallo's
Adiel Melendez and Lee's Cooper Casteel were dealing.
Montevallo had a great opportunity to take the early lead as Jacob pearl and
McGwire Turner led off the game with back-to-back singles. The Flame defense did a nice job of escaping the jam as Casteel rolled three consecutive ground balls. In the bottom half,
Adiel Melendez twirled a 1-2-3 inning to begin his outing.
After the Falcons were retired in the top of the second, Lee took the lead with a two-run homer to left.
In the fourth inning, both teams' offenses were shut down as they rolled into double-play balls. Lee threatened to score in the fifth, but Melendez struck out the final two batters of the inning to get out of a first and second one out jam.
The Falcons cracked the scoreboard in the eighth as
Daniel Irizarry was plunked to start the inning. Irizarry advanced to third on a single by
Ian Cartwright, but Cartwright got thrown out trying to advance to second. Lee was able to get out of the inning with a pop up and a ground out.
The Flames added an insurance run in the eighth with a sacrifice fly to center. UM went down 1-2-3 in the ninth to end the ballgame.
