MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo baseball team holds off a late comeback by Columbus State to win 9-7 on Tuesday, Mar. 4. The Falcons improve to 11-8 on the season while the Cougars fall to 8-8.
The Cougars came out of the gates swinging as they had their first two batters reach with singles to right field.
Mason Creacy and the Falcon defense bared down and would roll an inning-ending double play ball to escape the inning without allowing any runs. Montevallo hung a crooked number in the bottom half of the first as
McGwire Turner would single home
Connor Crowson who reached on a hit by pitch. After
Evan Radford single,
Logan Harbin would launch his fourth homer of the season into the trees behind the left field wall.
In his second inning of work, Creacy would do a nice job in the second and fire a shut down inning while picking up his first strikeout of the game. Montevallo would add on in the second as
Daniel Irizarry would score on a wild pitch.
Khalil Bell would score on the next pitch with a sacrifice fly off the bat of
McGwire Turner.
Matthew Bullard would take over for
Mason Creacy in the fourth who went three strong innings and allowed no runs or walks. Bullard would turn in his seventh scoreless outing of the season as he went two innings, scatter three hits and strikeout one.
Columbus State would get on the scoreboard in the sixth with a two out single through the right side. In the eighth, CSU would come within three as they scored three runs on two hits. The Cougars scored on an error after a lead off triple. More two out magic would come the Cougars way with a two RBI single to cut the Falcons lead to three.
The Falcons responded as Crowson would hit his GSC-leading 34 hit to drive in
Payton Stephenson. UM would score again in the inning on a wild pitch.
With the Montevallo closer,
Garrett Sloan, on the mound, the Cougars did everything they could to mount a comeback as they scored three in the top of the ninth to cut the Falcon lead to 9-7. Sloan would get the final batter of the ballgame out on a fly ball to left.
