Falcons Split With Chargers, Rubber Game Looms Ahead

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo baseball team comes away with a split in their double-header against Alabama-Huntsville on Friday, Mar. 7 at Kermit A. Johnson Field at Bob Riesener Stadium. The Falcons won game one 12-6, but fell in game two 5-4.

GAME ONE
Montevallo got yet another quality start from Adiel Melendez. Melendez was stellar as he tossed his third consecutive game where he went seven or more innings. The Falcons southpaw also had his second consecutive game where he did not allow a free pass. He was tremendous as he kept the Chargers off the scoreboard until the eighth inning. Melendez scattered eight hits, struck out six and only allowed two earned runs.

The Falcons gained the early advantage in the second inning with two-out RBI from Connor Crowson and McGwire Turner. The pitching staffs from both sides were stingy until the sixth inning when the UM offense got hot and scored four runs on five hits. Riley Thuringer got the scoring start with his second homer of 2025 to gave the Falcons a 4-0 lead. After Payton Stephenson doubled to right and was moved to third with a sacrifice bunt by Blake Wood, Crowson would pick up another RBI with a single up the middle. Crowson scored later in the inning with a sacrifice fly by McGwire Turner.

UM tacked on two more in the seventh as they scored on two Alabama-Huntsville errors. The Chargers would finally crack the scoreboard in the eighth as they scored two on a double to left center. Montevallo immediately responded with fours runs in the bottom half, starting with a solo shot off the bat of Evan Radford. Jacob Pearl knocked home Logan Harbin and Ethan Huddleston scored on a fielder's choice. The final RBI of the inning was a single to center from Easton Kleyn, the first RBI of his collegiate career.

UAH made it interesting as they scored three in the top of the ninth but the Falcon lead was too much.

GAME TWO
Alabama-Huntsville kept their offensive momentum going through the first game, as they launched a two-run homer in the first inning to take the lead. Montevallo hung a three spot in the bottom of the first with a three-run double off the bat of Jacob Pearl to score Harbin, Radford and Turner.

The Chargers tied the game at 3-3 with an RBI ground out in the second. They took the lead in the fifth with another two-run homer.

The Falcons came within one as Connor Crowson lifted his GSC-leading ninth homer of the season in the bottom of the seventh, but UAH closed the door on the Falcons to salvage game two.

Logan Medsker was great out of the bullpen as he threw two scoreless innings as he only allowed one hit while he struck out four.
