Falcons Hold Off Late Buccaneer Comeback, Medsker Picks Up First Save of 2025

MEMPHIS, Tn. – The University of Montevallo baseball team takes game one from Christian Brothers, 9-8. With the victory, Montevallo is now 21-19 and 12-13 in GSC play while the Buccaneers fall to 15-23 and 5-20 in conference play.

Christian Brothers took the early lead on the Falcons with a lead off walk that came around to score a batter later on a double. Falcon starter, Adiel Melendez, settled in and retired the final three batters of the inning including two swinging strikeouts.

The Falcons responded instantly by scoring eight runs in the top of the second with four hits while taking advantage of four Buccaneer errors in the inning. The onslaught started with an Evan Radford double, a Logan Harbin single and a Zen Hiatt walk to load the bases. Landon Leake picked up the hard-earned RBI with a hit by pitch to tie the game. Luke Mitchell reached on an error by the CBU catcher to give the Falcons the lead. The Buccaneer miscues continued as Payton Stephenson reached base on a catcher's interference. The third consecutive CBU error was an error on the shortstop off a ground ball. McGwire Turner made the errors hurt with a two RBI single to drive in Stephenson and Mitchell. Crowson and Radford followed up with RBI ground outs to extend the Falcon lead to 8-1.

Melendez went to work for the Falcons as he faced the minimum in the third while picking up his fourth punch out. He racked up three strikeouts in the fourth inning as he continued to mow down the Buccaneer line up. CBU ran into a ball for a solo shot in the fifth inning, but Melendez bounced back in the sixth with a 1-2-3 inning.

Adiel Melendez ended his day with two strikeouts in the seventh. The second batter he rung up reached base on a passed ball. The runner would score on a Falcon miscue on defense. Mitchell Rhodes took over for Melendez and was excellent as he only allowed one base runner on a walk in 1.2 innings pitched. Rhodes allowed no hits and no runs.

The Falcons went into the bottom of the ninth with a 9-2 lead. Christian Brothers, after striking out the first batter of the inning, strung together multiple good at bats together as the next five consecutive batters reached including an RBI single and a two RBI double. The Buccaneers would score on a wild pitch to shorten the lead to 9-7. The next batter drove in the runner from third with an RBI groundout to make the game 9-8 in favor of Montevallo. Now with two outs, CBU singled to keep the game alive. The runner advanced to second on a wild pitch then the next batter drew a walk to put the winning runner aboard. The Falcons would call upon Logan Medsker who got the next batter to ground out to McGwire Turner for the final out of the ballgame. This would be Medsker's first save at the Division II level.
