MONTEVALLO, ALA — In a tightly contested match to close out the regular season, the Montevallo men's tennis team fell just short in a 3-4 match to Auburn University at Montgomery on Saturday afternoon at the Tennis Court Complex.
The Falcons got off to a mixed start in doubles play. The pairing of Paul Sobich and Simon Luigs delivered a strong performance at No. 2 doubles, earning a 6-2 win. However, AUM secured the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots, giving them the early 1-0 lead.
In singles action, Montevallo showed its grit, taking three of the six matches. Luiz Brandao powered past his opponent in straight sets (6-4, 6-3) at No. 3 singles, while Gabriel Variano followed suit with a dominant 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 6 spot. Ryota Nakajima battled back from a set down to outlast his opponent in a thrilling three-set victory at No. 5 (4-6, 8-6, 10-1), helping the Falcons keep pace.
Despite the strong singles push, AUM's early doubles advantage and tight wins at the top of the lineup ultimately proved to be the difference.
With the regular season now complete, Montevallo shifts its focus to the upcoming Tournament play, ready to build off the momentum and lessons from a competitive campaign.
