Solo Homers By Mitchell and Turner, Great Outing By Melendez Push Falcons Past Bulldogs

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo baseball team picks up fourth consecutive win as they defeat Union 5-1 on Friday, Apr. 18. With the victory, Montevallo is now 24-19 and 15-13 inside the GSC. The Bulldogs fall to 18-26 and 12-15 in conference play.
 
The Bulldogs took the early lead as they drove in an RBI with a single to right field with runners on first and second. Adiel Melendez settled in with back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the inning.
 
Jacob Pearl worked a lead off walk then moved to third on a ground-rule double off the bat of McGwire Turner. After a walk by Connor Crowson to load the bases, Logan Harbin would drive in Pearl on a fielder's choice RBI. Luke Mitchell singled up the middle to bring home Turner and Harbin to give the Falcons the lead.
 
Melendez bounced back with a shutdown inning. The got the first two batters out, but Union got a runner aboard with a two out single. Melendez picked off the runner at first to end the inning. McGwire Turner extended the Falcon lead in the bottom of the second with his seventh long ball of the season.
 
In the third and fourth innings, the Bulldogs would tally a hit in each inning, but were unable to score. With the three-run lead, Melendez would retire the Bulldogs in order in the fifth. In the sixth, Union would get the lead off man aboard with a single to left. Turner and Stephenson rolled a nice double-play ball to quickly end the Bulldog threat. The final batter of the inning grounded out to Turner.
 
In the bottom half of the sixth, Luke Mitchell launched a ball into the trees over the left field wall for his second homer of the season. Melendez would allow two singles in the top of the seventh, but would not allow any runners to score.
 
With two outs in the top of the seventh, Melendez gave way to Logan Wilsker who retired the final batter in the inning with a ground out to Harbin at first. Logan Medsker then took care of the Bulldogs in the ninth including two strikeouts.

GAME NOTES
  • Adiel Melendez dazzled yet again as he went 7.2 innings, allowed only one earned run, one walk and he struck out six. Melendez earned his eighth win of the season, his sixth outing of seven innings or more and his 10th game with five or more strikeouts.
  • Logan Wilsker and Logan Medsker threw scoreless outings.
  • McGwire Turner and Luke Mitchell hit solo homers. Both had multi-hit days while Mitchell drove in three RBI.
  • Evan Radford had his 18th multi-hit game of the season.
  • Logan Harbin drove in an RBI and was on base twice.

The Falcons will take on Union on Saturday, Apr. 19 for games two and three of their GSC series. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. CT with Senior Day taking place at 11:30 a.m. CT.
