MONTGOMERY, Ala. – In one of their most thrilling wins of the season, the University of Montevallo women's tennis team pulled off a stunning comeback against No. 11-ranked and No. 3-seeded Lee University, rallying from a 0-3 deficit to earn a dramatic 4-3 victory at the GSC Tourney.
The match began with Lee taking two of three doubles courts, claiming the early point. Klara Podskubkova and Claire Jaramba gave Montevallo a spark with a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles, but Lee responded by taking No. 1 and No. 3 to jump ahead 1-0.
Lee extended its lead quickly with wins at the top of the singles lineup. Ashleigh Simes defeated Klara Podskubkova in straight sets (1-6, 1-6), and Aliyah Dwyer edged out Claire Jaramba at No. 3 (3-6, 5-7), pushing the Flames out to a 0-3 advantage.
But from there, the Falcons recovered the match.
London Breedlove captured the first point for Montevallo at the No. 6 singles spot (6-1, 7-5).
The Falcons followed that up with a pair of singles victories as, Johanna Kullmann fought through a tough battle at No. 4, winning 7-5, 6-3 to make it 3-2 and Greta Vagnini earned tough tiebreaker victories in both sets (7-6, 7-6) at No. 5 to tie the overall match, 3-3.
Elena Ondobo delivered a huge three-set win at No. 2 singles (6-4, 3-6, 6-3) to secure the victory for the Falcons at the No. 2 spot.
The Falcons advance to face No. 2 seed Mississippi College on Friday, Apr. 25.
