Falcons Take Series From No. 12 Delta State

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo baseball team takes the series against No. 12 Delta State on Saturday, Apr. 5. With two wins today, the Falcons improve to 20-18 on the season and 11-13 in GSC play. The Statesmen are now 27-10 and 19-5 in conference play.

GAME ONE
The Statesmen quickly loaded the bases in the first inning with two walks and a single. Delta State took the lead with a single to left to score one. DSU got their second run with a bases loaded hit by pitch.

Montevallo did a great job of responding as Jacob Pearl singled to lead off the inning, then McGwire Turner followed with a walk. This set up Evan Radford whole hit a three-run shot to give the Falcons the lead. This would be Radford's ninth of the season.

Both pitchers settled in nicely after a 30 pitch first inning. Matthew Bullard went to work and held the Statesmen scoreless in the second and third innings. The Falcons retired DSU in order in the third with the help of a double play by Mitchell Walker, McGwire Turner and Connor Crowson.

Bullard threw his third consecutive scoreless inning in the fourth, then was rewarded by the Falcon offense in the bottom half as Landon Leake drew a bases loaded walk to extend the lead to 4-2. Mitchell Walker followed that up with a single over the shortstops head to score Crowson.

DSU got a run back in the top of the fifth as they hit an RBI single that tipped off the glove of Bullard and went into the outfield. Evan Radford would step to the plate with two on, two out in the bottom fo the fifth and would launch his second three-run homer of the ball game. This was Radford's sixth RBI and 10th long ball of the season.

Delta State hit a two-run homer in the top of the sixth to bring the Statesmen within three. After retiring the Falcons in order, DSU hit their second homer of the game to close the gap to 8-6. After Montevallo went 1-2-3 for the second consecutive inning, Head Coach Chandler Rose called upon his closer Garrett Sloan. The Statesmen scratched another run across in the eighth with a single down the left field line to come within one.

With two on, one out, Daniel Irizarry lined a ball down the left line that scored Evan Radford from second. DSU walked the bases loaded to set up the double play, but it backfired on the Statesmen quickly as Easton Kleyn singled to center to score Harbin. Payton Stephenson added an extra insurance run with a sacrifice fly to center to score Irizarry from third.

Sloan entered the ninth inning with a four-run lead and did what he does best, slammed the door to end the game. In the ninth, he only allowed one base runner with a two out walk. Sloan earned his GSC-leading 10th save of the season.

GAME TWO
The rubber game of the series turned out to be a pitcher's duel between Montevallo's Gino Cozzi and Delta State's Logan Eldridge. Cozzi held the Statesmen scoreless through four as he struck out four batters in that span.

Cozzi allowed a two out double in the first, but stranded the runner at second as he got the final batter of the inning to lineout to Logan Harbin at first to end the inning. In the second, Cozzi got the first two outs quickly via the strikeout. DSU loaded the bases, but the Falcons would exit the inning unscathed with a ground out to Harbin at first.

After both offenses went down in order in the third, Cozzi struck out two batters to start the inning. Delta State got two runners on, but the final batter for the inning flew out to Radford in right.

The Statesmen finally cracked the scoreboard with a double to the wall in left center to drive in a run. DSU added on with an RBI infield single in the inning. Logan Eldridge got the first out of the bottom of the fifth to retire his 10th consecutive batter. Payton Stephenson broke that streak with his second home run of the season with a solo shot. Montevallo tied the game with a bases loaded walk by Connor Crowson. UM took the lead with a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Evan Radford. The Falcons extended the lead as Logan Harbin drove home Crowson and Turner with a two RBI single to center.

Logan Medsker came on in the sixth and struck out the first two batters he saw. Delta State got the next two batters to reach, but Medsker got the final batter of the inning to fly out. Connor Crowson gave the pitching staff some insurance with his 12th homer of the season in the bottom of the sixth to put the Falcons up 7-2.

Garrett Sloan entered in the seventh inning for the Falcons and was able to slam the door for the second time today as he allowed one hit and one earned run while striking out one batter.
