Two Homers By Radford Not Enough Against Shorter

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo baseball team drops their midweek game against Shorter on Tuesday, Apr. 8. With the loss, UM is now 20-19 while the Hawks improve to 22-15.

In their first match up after Shorter joined the Conference Carolinas, the Hawks took the early lead with a two RBI single to left. Shorter's first three batters of the ballgame reached base.

After Seth Gurr fired a 1-2-3 top of the second inning, the Falcons got one the board as Landon Leake drove home Logan Harbin for the first UM run of the game. Mitchell Walker singled, then Easton Kleyn tied the game up at 2-2 with an RBI single up the middle. 

Shorter took the lead back as they scored off a Falcon throwing error in the third. Evan Radford smacked his 11th homer of the season with a solo shot to center to tie the game.

The Hawks would answer with a four run top of the sixth. In the inning, Shorter had a two RBI double and a two-run home run. 

The Falcons would allow a run in the top of the ninth as Shorter extended the lead to 8-3. Montevallo scored two in the bottom of the ninth as Evan Radford blasted his second homer of the game and 12th of the season. Shorter would close out the Falcons by inducing a game-ending fly out to center.

GAME NOTES
  • Evan Radford hit his 11th and 12 home runs of the season. Radford drove in three RBI and now has five homers in his last five games.
  • Landon Leake led the Falcons with a three hit effort including a double and two singles. 
  • Easton Kleyn and Zen Hiatt had multi-hit days for the Falcons.
  • Seth Gurr had a nice relief outing as he pitched three innings, allowed one hit, no earned runs and three strikeouts.
  • Mason Creacy faced four batters and retired all four including a strikeout.
  • Dylan Dickert and Mitchell Rhodes both threw an inning and didn't allow an earned run.

Up next for the Falcons is a trip to Memphis, Tennessee as they take on Christian Brothers in their weekend Gulf South Conference Series. Game one is set for 2:00 p.m. CT on Friday, Apr. 11.
