Falcons Fall to Lady Blazers on the Road

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Montevallo women's basketball team fell to the Valdosta State Lady Blazers, 66-51, inside of the Complex on Thursday evening.

A pair of Falcons scored in double figures in Audrey Hendrix (14) and Emily Mouser (13).

The Lady Blazers opened the game strong with the first seven points, before Hendrix scored the first basket of the day for the Falcons at 5:16. Olivia Johnigan and Mouser added back-to-back jumpers, as VSU held on to a, 7-6, lead at the 4:14 mark. The Lady Blazers responded with a pair of baskets, before Mouser cashed in on a driving lay-in. The Lady Blazers continued to push with back-to-back lay-ins, before a pair of Hendrix free throws would end the quarter, as VSU led, 15-10.

Mouser opened the second quarter with the first points for Montevallo from the free throw line, but the Lady Blazers stretched its lead out to nine, 21-12, at the 8:13 mark. Mouser continued to fire, scoring the next five points for Montevallo with a triple and a driving lay-in, but VSU jumped ahead by double digits, 28-17, with 5:20 left in the second quarter. The Falcons responded with back-to-back baskets from Elyse Hughes and Hendrix to cut the deficit to, 28-22, at the 4:27 mark. Jerrilyn Richardson added a lay-in in the next few minutes, but the Lady Blazers stretched its lead back out to double digits, 35-24, with 1:09 left. Mouser hit a pair of free throws and Julia Susla added a pair of free throws to close the half, as VSU held a, 37-28, advantage at the break.

Hughes opened the second half strong, scoring back-to-back buckets in the opening minute and a half, but the Lady Blazers began to take control, using an 8-0 run to stretch its lead out to, 47-32, at the 6:03 mark. Richardson halted the run at 4:08, hitting one of two free throws. Kylee Norman added a pair of free throws and Hendrix scored the last four UM points, as VSU held a, 53-39, advantage at the end of the third quarter.

Hendrix continued to find success from the floor, hitting a triple in the opening minute of the fourth quarter. The Lady Blazers cashed in on a lay-in for its first bucket of the fourth, but a three-pointer from Norman would cut the deficit to ten, 55-45, at the 7:27 mark. VSU responded with back-to-back buckets, before Johnigan hit a jumper. Both teams traded a pair of baskets through the next three minutes, as VSU held on to a, 59-49, advantage with 4:38 left in the contest. The Blazers closed the game strong to ultimately take home the, 66-51, victory.
