MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo men's basketball topped Lee, 71-66, on Saturday afternoon behind a quartet of double-digit scorers.
The Falcons used a hot start from deep with a pair of threes from
Bryant James and another from
Brandon Fussell to take an 11-2 lead in the first three minutes. Lee battled back to cut the lead to one before the two sides traded buckets over the next four minutes to leave Montevallo with a 15-14 lead at the 12:07 mark. Back-to-back threes from
Devon McKinnon and
Derek Moore pushed Montevallo to a five-point lead before the Flames tied the game at 21-21 with 8:08 to play. Four minutes later, Lee took its first lead of the day after a finish inside to leave Montevallo trailing by one. The Falcons outscored Lee 7-2 in the final two minutes of the first half to take a 33-31 lead heading into the break.
Out of the break, Montevallo stretched its lead to 42-35 with a 9-2 run sparked by five points from Moore in the first four minutes. Lee cut the lead down to three, but
Tyson Sexton kept the Falcons out in front with his first three of the day at the 13:52 mark. The Flames again trimmed the Falcons' lead to just one point before Sexton added a second three to give Montevallo a 50-46 lead at the 10:07 mark. With just under six minutes to go, James nailed a pair of threes to push Montevallo to a 62-55 advantage before a pair of free throws from Sexton gave Montevallo its largest lead of the half with 3:54 to play. Montevallo kept the Flames at bay down the stretch to take a 71-66 win on Saturday afternoon.
