Falcons Fall in Four-Set Battle Against UAH

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo volleyball team saw its six-match winning streak come to an end Thursday night, falling to No. 1 UAH, 3-1, in a hard-fought Gulf South Conference matchup at Central State Bank Arena on Neon Night.

The Falcons (17-7, 9-4 GSC) battled the Chargers (20-2, 12-1 GSC) through four sets, taking the second set in dominant fashion before narrowly falling in an extended fourth set. UAH secured the victory by set scores of 25-20, 12-25, 25-20 and 28-26.

Montevallo opened the first set with an early 8-4 advantage behind kills from Eliza Tyrrell. The Chargers responded to take a 17-14 lead, but the Falcons battled back to even the score at 20-20. UAH closed the set with five unanswered points to claim a 25-20 victory.

The Falcons answered with a commanding performance in the second set, hitting an impressive .417 while holding UAH to a .148 hitting percentage. With Montevallo leading 9-7, Blakeley Robbins sparked a five-point scoring run from the service line to extend the advantage to 14-7. The Falcons continued to build their lead, using kills from Katie Wilkerson and service aces from Ava Wind and Lily Erdal to pull away. Montevallo finished the set with an 25-12 victory to even the match at 1-1.

The fourth set featured the most competitive stretch of the night, with 14 ties and nine lead changes. After falling behind 12-8, Montevallo rallied with five consecutive points, including back-to-back service aces from Singleton, to take a 13-12 lead. The teams continued trading points throughout the set before the Falcons rallied from a 22-20 deficit to take a 23-22 advantage behind consecutive kills from Ellie Scharlow.

UAH responded to earn set point at 24-23, but Montevallo fought back to extend the contest. A kill from Wilkerson and a Charger setting error eventually gave the Falcons a 26-25 advantage and an opportunity to force a fifth set. However, UAH scored the final three points to escape with a 28-26 victory and secure the four-set win.

Wilkerson led the Falcons offensively with 14 kills, while Tyrrell added 12 kills on a .478 hitting percentage. Wind anchored the defense with a match-high 22 digs, and Singleton delivered four service aces.
