Falcons Outlast Hillsdale Behind Fitzgerald’s 8-RBI Day

MONTEVALLO, Ala.Jack Fitzgerald drove in eight runs with three extra-base hits, and Logan Medsker earned his second save of the weekend on Sunday as Montevallo outslugged Hillsdale, 18-14, to secure an opening weekend series win.

Hillsdale opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first, but the Falcons quickly responded with a three-run bottom half, highlighted by a bases-clearing double from Fitzgerald. Montevallo added two more in the second on an RBI groundout from McGwire Turner and an RBI double from Evan Radford.

The Chargers answered with three in the top of the third, but Montevallo struck back in the bottom half with its second three-run inning. A bases-loaded walk to Fitzgerald brought home a run before Hollon Brock doubled to right field, scoring two more.

Hillsdale pulled ahead with a homer in the fourth and a six-run fifth inning, turning an 8-4 Falcon lead into an 11-8 deficit. Montevallo cut the lead to 11-9 with an RBI fielder's choice from Caleb Karll in the fifth. The Chargers added two in the sixth, but the Falcons exploded for seven in the bottom half, fueled by a leadoff home run from Ian Cartwright, a three-run triple from Fitzgerald, and an RBI triple from Karll.

Fitzgerald kept his hot streak going with a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh, extending the lead to 17-13. Hillsdale added a run in the eighth, but Medsker escaped a bases-loaded jam with a popout and flyout to preserve the three-run advantage. Montevallo capped its scoring with an eighth-inning run off a throwing error, and Medsker closed out the win in the ninth with a groundout and two strikeouts, sealing the Falcons' back-and-forth 18-14 victory and the series.
