MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Montevallo women's basketball team secured its second victory in a row on Saturday afternoon, taking down Auburn Montgomery, 86-78, inside of the AUM Athletics Complex.
Three Falcons reached double figures in Emily Mouser (24), Kylee Norman (17), and Elyse Hughes (15).
The Falcons got off to a solid start, as baskets from Julia Susla and Elyse Hughes put the Falcons ahead, 6-0, early. The Warhawks got on the board with a three-pointer, but back-to-back triples from Kylee Norman and Emily Mouser gave the Falcons a, 12-3, advantage at the 6:52 mark. The Falcons continued to push, outscoring the Warhawks 9-4 in the next minute to stretch the lead out to, 21-7, with 4:39 left in the opening quarter. Emily Mouser hit a pair of baskets in the final minute of the first to give the Falcons a, 26-16, advantage after one.
Alani Owens scored the first basket of the second quarter, hitting a hookshot at 9:18. Carlyn Burdette and Susla added baskets in the next few minutes, as the Falcons held on to a, 34-21, lead at the 6:48 mark. The Warhawks hit a pair of baskets to cut the deficit to single digits, but a 6-0 run highlighted by back-to-back baskets from Mary Cartee and Susla gave the Falcons a, 40-25, advantage with 2:30 left in the half. Norman and Mouser hit baskets to close the second quarter, as Montevallo held a, 44-31, lead at the break.
Norman and Mouser hit the first Falcon baskets of the second half, as the Falcons held on to its double-digit lead, 49-39, at the 7:08 mark. Montevallo extended its lead, using a 7-0 run highlighted by baskets from Hughes and Norman to pull ahead, 56-39, at 5:48. Mouser scored a jumper in the next minute, but the Warhawks outscored the Falcons 7-2 to cut the Montevallo lead down to, 58-46, with 3:37 left in the third. Both teams traded points, before Jerrilyn Richardson closed the quarter with a pair of free throws to give Montevallo a, 64-50, advantage heading into the final quarter.
Both teams traded a pair of baskets to open the fourth quarter, as Owens hit a triple and a lay-in. Mouser cashed in from long range, keeping Montevallo ahead by double digits, 72-56, at the 6:48 mark. The Warhawks began to make a fourth quarter push, as an AUM 13-0 run made it a one possession game, 72-69, with 4:01 left in the contest. Hughes halted the AUM run, cashing in on a lay-in at 3:43. Norman and Audrey Hendrix each converted from the free throw line in the next minute and a half, as Montevallo held on to a narrow, 78-76, advantage with 1:36 left in the game. Hendrix and Mouser hit back-to-back jumpers to stretch the lead out to six points, 82-76, with 1:01 left on the clock. Mouser and Hughes cashed in on free throws in the final minute to preserve the Montevallo, 86-78, victory.
