MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo men's lacrosse took an 18-10 win over Mars Hill on Wednesday evening in the Falcons' home opener.
Off the first faceoff of the day,
Jetty Miller opened the scoring for the Falcons with an unassisted effort before
Matthew Boas scored his first of seven goals at the 12:58 mark. Boas scored just over a minute later to give Montevallo a 3-0 lead in the first four minutes of the game. Senior keeper
Alex Egorshin tallied his first save of the day at the 11:11 mark before Boas completed a first-quarter hat trick off an assist from
Michael Howkins to put the Falcons up 4-0. The Falcons then added back-to-back goals from
Lucas Mullen and
William Angus to go up 6-0 with 4:30 left in the first.
Nick Givens extended Montevallo's lead to seven late in the first to send the game to the second with Montevallo leading 7-0.
To start the second quarter, Howkins scored Montevallo's first man-up goal of the day with Mullen credited with the assist. Mars Hill finally got on the board with a pair of unanswered goals to make the score 8-2 with 7:05 left in the half. Howkins added his second goal of the quarter at the 5:56 mark before
Devin Virk stretched Montevallo's lead to 10-2 just a few seconds later. The Lions added a man-up goal to trim the lead down to 10-3 before Mullen tallied a third goal to mark the score 11-3 with less than 90 second left in the half. Mars Hill closed the first 30 minutes with a goal to send the game to the half with Montevallo leading 11-4.
Egorshin opened the half with a pair of saves in the first three minutes before Boas added yet another goal to put the Falcons up by eight. Just two minutes, later Boas added his sixth goal of the night to stretch the lead to 13-4 before his seventh goal and third of the quarter gave UM a 14-4 lead with 7:09 left in the third. With just 34 seconds left before the fourth,
Marley Straker gave Montevallo a 15-4 lead with his first goal of the night.
Mars Hill opened the fourth quarter scoring to cut the lead down to 10 with 12:38 on the clock. Egorshin tallied another pair of saves ahead of
Aidan Collery's unassisted goal with 7:12 left to put the Falcons up 16-5. Mars Hill then went on a four-goal run in just over a minute to slice the Falcons' lead down to 16-9 with 4:00 on the clock.
Hudson Haire's first goal of the night before Boas scored the final goal of the night for Montevallo with 1:18 left. Mars Hill scored in the final minute to finish the game with a final score of 18-10.
