MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo women's basketball team fell to West Florida, 64-51, inside of Central State Bank Arena on Wednesday evening.
Emily Mouser led the way for the Falcons with 20 points, while Elyse Hughes recorded a near double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds.
Montevallo opened the game strong with back-to-back lay-ins from Hughes in the opening minute. The Argos cashed in on a lay-in, but Audrey Hendrix hit a three-pointer and Mouser hit a pair of free throws to put the Falcons ahead, 9-2, at the 7:31 mark. Mouser added a jumper, but the Argos hit four baskets in the next three minutes to cut the Montevallo lead to, 11-10, at 4:24. Hughes hit a pair of jumpers, but five points from UWF tied the game at 15 points apiece at the end of one.
UWF opened the second quarter with a three-pointer to take its first lead of the day, but back-to-back baskets from Hughes put the Falcons back in front, 19-18, at the 7:30 mark. Both teams traded baskets, before the Argos knocked down three consecutive baskets to take a, 26-21, lead at the 4:46 mark. The Falcons responded, as Mouser cashed in on an and-one and Audrey Hendrix drained a triple to put the Falcons back in front, 27-26, with 3:12 left in the half. London Robinson cashed in on a lay-in, but the Argos closed the half outscoring the Falcons 8-2 to take a, 34-29, lead at the break.
Hughes scored the first Montevallo basket of the second half, but the Argos opened the third period with a 10-2 run to jump ahead, 39-31, at the 5:09 mark. The Falcons responded, as Carlyn Burdette drained a triple and Hughes hit a lay-in to cut the deficit to, 39-36, with 3:46 left in the third quarter. Alani Owens cashed in on a lay-in and Mouser hit a triple as the Falcons trailed by one point, 42-41, at 1:27. The Argos closed the quarter with three consecutive baskets to take a, 48-41, advantage into the final quarter.
Both teams opened the fourth quarter with a bucket in the first two minutes, as Mouser hit the first Falcon field goal at 8:33. The Argos scored the next six points to stretch its lead to double digits, 56-43, at the 6:14 mark. Mouser continued to fire, hitting three baskets in the next four minutes to cut the UWF advantage back to single digits, 58-49, with 4:25 left in the contest. Montevallo would only find one more basket in the final four minutes, as West Florida held on to secure the, 64-51, victory.
