Falcons Improve to 16-6 With 34-Point Win Over Union

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo men's basketball picked up a 34-point win over Union on Thursday night behind a quartet of double-digit performances from the Falcons.
 
Union opened the game on a 7-0 run to lead by the same score at the 17:22 mark before Devon McKinnon broke the ice for the Falcons with a triple. Bryant James pulled the Falcons within one with a three of his own before Fussell tied the score at 9-9 with an old-fashioned three-point play. With a James triple at the 11:49 mark of the first half, Montevallo took its first lead of the game at 16-15 and would not relinquish the advantage for the remainder of the night. Jaylen Curry would score the next five points for Montevallo before James nailed his third three of the first half to give UM a 27-21 lead at the 6:28 mark. The Falcons used a 10-3 run in the final three minutes of the first half to lead 44-27 at the break with James leading the game with 15 points at the half.
 
Out of the half, Montevallo quickly stretched its lead with 29 points with a pair of three from Curry and another from James to lead 60-31 with 15:55 on the clock. At the 12:33 mark, Miller Moody gave Montevallo a 30-point advantage with a finish at the rim that pushed UM's lead to 66-36. Sam Duskin got in on the scoring frenzy with five quick points in three Montevallo possessions to stretch the lead to 35 with just 8:47 to play. Union would trim away at Montevallo's lead but a three from O'Niell Connolly with 5:22 left gave Montevallo an 85-50 lead. Montevallo saw its largest lead of the night at 95-55 with just 2:08 on the clock. The Falcons would hold its lead for the remainder of the game to improve to 16-6 on the season and 12-4 in Gulf South Conference action.

  • Montevallo shot the cover off the ball with a 56.3-percent mark from the field while shooting 41.4 percent from deep with Union shooting 41.4 percent from the floor while shooting just 19.2 percent from long range.
  • Union held a slim 36-34 advantage on the glass while taking a 13-10 lead in offensive rebounds.
  • The Falcons posted a total of 48 points in the paint for one of the highest marks of the season while scoring 29 points on 20 Union turnovers.
  • Bryant James led Montevallo's offense with 20 points on 7-for-9 shooting and 5-for-7 from deep while adding six rebounds.
  • Freshman guard Devon McKinnon posted 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting while adding six boards in 31 minutes on the floor.
  • Jaylen Curry posted 17 points and three board while adding two steals and a block with Brandon Fussell scoring 16 points on 7-for-13 shooting with five boards, six assists and five steals.
