TAMPA, Fla. – The Montevallo baseball team fell to No. 1 Tampa, 9-1, on Saturday afternoon at Tampa Baseball Field.
The Spartans struck first in the opening frame with an RBI groundout before extending the lead to 3-0 on a two-run homer in the fourth inning. The Falcons got on the board in the top of the fifth as back-to-back, two-out walks set the stage for a Caleb Karll RBI single.
Tampa responded in the bottom half with a five-run inning to take an 8-1 advantage before pushing across its final run in the sixth on an RBI single.
Freshman relievers Bennett Johnson and Matthew Sparks closed out the game with a pair of scoreless innings for the Falcons, combining for four strikeouts over the final two frames.
