MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo women's basketball team earned a, 68-59, victory over Christian Brothers in the Falcons' Power of Pink game on Saturday.
A trio of Falcons reached double figures in Kylee Norman (14), Elyse Hughes (13), and Emily Mouser (13).
Montevallo struck first with back-to-back baskets from Hughes and Mouser. Audrey Hendrix added a three pointer a minute later, but the Lady Bucs hit three shots to take its first lead of the day, 8-7, at the 6:40 mark. Hendrix hit a pair of free throws and Hughes cashed in on a lay-in to put Montevallo back in front, 11-8, at 5:25. After a CBU bucket, Hughes scored five straight points to stretch the UM lead out to, 17-10, with 54 seconds left. The Lady Bucs connected on an and-one in the final seconds to cut the deficit to, 17-13, at the end of one.
Jerrilyn Richardson cashed in on a lay-in to open the second quarter. Alani Owens added back-to-back baskets in the next few minutes, as Montevallo lead, 24-16, at the 6:40 mark. Both teams traded baskets through the next five minutes, as Carlyn Burdette and Julia Susla got into the scoring column for Montevallo, keeping the Falcons ahead, 29-23, with 1:36 left in the half. Montevallo used five straight points from Mouser and a Burdette lay-in to pull ahead by double digits, 36-25, at the break.
Hughes cashed in on a lay-in to open the third quarter, but back-to-back baskets from CBU would cut the Montevallo lead back down to single digits, 38-29, at the 5:58 mark. Norman began to find a rhythm from the floor, scoring eight points through the next three minutes to stretch the Falcon lead out to, 47-32, with 3:21 left in the third quarter. Mouser hit a jumper and Owens hit her second triple of the day to put the Falcons ahead, 52-37, at 1:44. The Lady Bucs cashed in on a lay-in and Hughes hit one free throw to close the third, as the Falcons led, 53-39, going into the final quarter.
Norman opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with a lay-in at 7:31. Susla added a triple two minutes later, but the Lady Bucs outscored the Falcons 10-3 to cut the Montevallo lead back down to single digits, 58-49, at the 4:05 mark. Both teams traded a pair of baskets, as Montevallo held on to its nine-point advantage, 63-54, with 1:44 left in the contest. The Falcon defense held strong through the next minute, forcing back-to-back CBU turnovers, leading the Lady Bucs to fouling to stop the game clock. Montevallo hit five free throws down the stretch, with four of those coming from Mouser, to secure a Falcon, 68-59, victory.
