LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Montevallo softball team held off a late rally from West Alabama to capture a, 5-3, victory in the series opener on Friday evening.
Taylor Lloyd made history in Friday's contest, becoming the Montevallo All-Time Career Strikeouts leader. Lloyd recorded six strikeouts on the day to bring her career total to 424, surpassing former leader Mychael MicMillan (419). Lloyd earned her 14th win and pitched her 12th complete game of the season.
Montevallo looked to strike first in the series opener, as Ariana Pinder, Kiley Christopher, and Taylor Rogers earned free passes to load the bases in the top of the second. Emma Hawkins drew a walk to bring home Pinder, putting the Falcons in front, 1-0. Bentlee Stiner walked and Becca Benton was hit by a pitch to stretch the lead out to, 3-0. The Tigers responded, plating a run in the bottom half of the inning, to cut the Montevallo lead to, 3-1.
Montevallo added to its lead in the top of the fourth, as Bentlee Stiner hit an RBI-single to score Rogers and Makayla Peters added a two RBI-double to score Stiner, stretching the Montevallo lead out to, 5-1. The Tigers looked to respond once again in the bottom half of the fourth, loading the bases with two outs, but stellar defense from Makayla Peters, Becca Benton and Kiley Christopher would deny the Tigers a chance at bringing a runner home to end the inning.
After a few quiet innings, West Alabama rallied in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases once again. The Tigers scored a pair of runs in the inning, but Kiley Christopher would catch a runner stealing to end the game, securing the Montevallo, 5-3, victory.
