TAMPA, Fla. – Montevallo men's lacrosse fell short against Palm Beach Atlantic in an 11-9 loss on Sunday afternoon.
After a pair of
Alex Egorshin saves to open the game, PBA scored first to take a 1-0 lead with 13:46 on the clock. The game remained scoreless for the next seven minutes with a pair of shots from Montevallo while Egorshin added another two saves before PBA made the score 2-0.
Samuel Martin's unassisted goal at the 3:37 mark put the Falcons on the board before
Morgan Trites tied the game at 2-2 with 1:31 left in the first. Montevallo saw one more shot to close the quarter but went to the second with game knotted at two apiece.
Egorshin opened the second with yet another save to continue his hot start before Martin found the back of the net for a man-up goal to give Montevallo its first lead of the game at 3-2. PBA answered with a pair of unanswered goals to regain control at 4-3 with 8:59 left in the first half. Two minutes later,
Aidan Collery's first goal of the game tied the game back up before Martin competed his hat trick with 4:36 to play to give Montevallo a 5-4 lead. Egorshin tallied another trio of saves while
Cameron Diehl's goal put the Falcons up by two heading into the break.
PBA used a pair of quick goals in the first two minutes of the second half to tie the game at 6-6 before taking a 7-6 lead with 12:00 on the clock. Diehl's second goal of the day brought Montevallo back level with the Sailfish at the 11:14 mark. Egorshin stopped three more shots before PBA regained control at the 6:35 mark. Egorshin held PBA scoreless in the final six minutes of the quarter, but the Falcons couldn't find a goal and went to the fourth trailing 8-7.
Montevallo saw five scoring chances to open the final 15 minutes but couldn't find the mark before Palm Beach Atlantic took a 9-7 lead with 10:12 to play. Back-to-back Montevallo goals from
Michael Howkins and
Lucas Mullen tied the game at 9-9 with just 7:28 left on the clock. PBA answered with another pair of goals to jump back in front by two with 5:21 to play. Montevallo fired three more shots in the closing stages but was held scoreless and eventually fell to PBA, 11-9.
