ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Montevallo men's lacrosse fell to No. 7 Maryville on the road on Saturday afternoon, 9-8, despite four goals from
Michael Howkins.
Senior goalkeeper
Alex Egorshin opened the game with four saves in the first eight minutes to keep Maryville off the board before the Saints took a 1-0 lead with 6:30 left in the opening quarter. The Falcons saw a pair of shots on goal that were both denied before MU added to its lead at the 4:29 mark. Egorshin finished the quarter with another save to send the game to the second with Montevallo trailing 2-0.
In the first 12 seconds on the second quarter,
Michael Howkins scored Montevallo's first goal of the day on a man-up chance to cut the lead in half. The sophomore attacker added a second goal just three minutes later on an assist from
Marley Straker to tie the game at two apiece. Maryville regained control with a 3-2 lead at the 11:47 mark. After four straight saves from Egorshin, the Saints scored three-straight to go up by four with 4:50 left in the half. Egorshin ended the half with another pair of saves to send the game to the break with Montevallo trailing 6-2.
Maryville stretched its lead to five out of the break before Howkins ended the Falcons' scoreless drought with his third goal of the day. Montevallo fired four shots on goal but each was stopped while Egorshin added another four saves to his ledger over the next eight minutes. In the final two minutes of the third,
Matthew Egorshin scored another man-up goal for the Falcons before
Lucas Mullen scored with just 21 seconds left to send the game to the fourth with Maryville leading 7-5.
The Saints struck first in the fourth quarter to extend the lead to three before Howkins fourth goal of the day brought Montevallo back within two at the 12:33 mark. After another pair of saves from Egorshin,
Aidan Collery scored back-to-back goals for Montevallo to tie the game at 8-8 with 6:15 on the clock. Just under a minute later, the Saints broke the tie to take a 9-8 lead late. Montevallo saw a final scoring chance in the final 21 seconds but couldn't convert and fell 9-8 on the road.
