Falcons Open Series with 9-5 Win Over Valdosta State

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo baseball opened the weekend series with a 9-5 win over Valdosta State on Friday night.
 
After a three-up, three-down top of the first from Zach Wyatt, Montevallo kicked off the bottom half of the inning with a two-run homer from McGwire Turner before Evan Radford added a second two-run shot to five Montevallo a 4-0 lead after the first six outs. Hollon Brock drove in another run for Montevallo in the bottom of the second to stretch the lead to 5-0 after two.
 
With Wyatt continuing his hot start through four, Turner hit his second two-run bomb of the night to push the lead out to 7-0 in the bottom of the fourth. An RBI single from Joel Chandler scored Preston Bedford to push Montevallo to an 8-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth.
 
After six perfect innings from Wyatt, Valdosta State tallied its first hit of the night in the top of the seventh before breaking the scoreless stretch with its first run of the game to make the score 8-1 after seven. The Blazers added another three runs in the eighth with a three-run home run to cut Montevallo's lead down to 8-4. Bedford answered in the bottom of the eighth to put the Falcons up by five heading into the final stanza.
 
VSU looked the spark a comeback with a leadoff homer in the ninth, but three outs from reliever Matthew Birdsong closed the game without another run crossing the plate to seal a 9-5 win for the Falcons.
 
NOTABLES
  • Starter Zach Wyatt threw 7.2 innings in his win and posted a total of 12 strikeouts with just three hits allowed and two earned runs after throwing six perfect innings to start.
  • McGwire Turner led Montevallo's bats with a pair of homers for four RBI on a 2-for-3 night at the plate.
  • Evan Radford added a 2-for-2 night at the plate with a pair of RBI and two runs scored.
  • Preston Bedford found his first home run of the season with his lone hit of the night.
 
UP NEXT: Montevallo hosts the Blazers to decide the series in a double-header on Saturday, March 21 with first pitch set for 12 p.m.
