Radford’s Walk-Off Grand Slam Caps Comeback Win Over Lee

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo erased multiple deficits and delivered a dramatic walk-off finish Friday night, outlasting Lee 16-12 in a 10-inning slugfest at Kermit A. Johnson Field at Bob Riesener Stadium.

Lee struck first with two runs in the second and added a solo homer in the third to take an early 3-0 lead, but Montevallo began to chip away in the fourth. After a pair of singles put runners on, Hollon Brock brought home the Falcons' first run with an RBI groundout to make it 3-1.

The Flames erupted for five runs in the fifth to stretch the lead to 8-1, but Montevallo answered immediately with a five-run frame of their own to get back in it. McGwire Turner started the rally with an RBI double, followed by a two-run double from Jack Fitzgerald to cut the deficit to 8-4. Brock added an RBI single, and Mason Woolever capped the inning with a run-scoring knock to pull Montevallo within 8-6.

After Lee pushed its lead to 9-6 with a solo homer in the seventh, Montevallo responded again with a four-run inning to take its first lead of the night. Dominic Maldet drove in a run on a groundout before Christian Kallaher delivered an RBI single down the right-field line. A wild pitch brought in another run, and Nic Thompson came home to score to give the Falcons a 10-9 advantage.

Lee answered in the eighth, capitalizing on a defensive miscue before a two-run homer put the Flames back on top, 12-10. Montevallo refused to go away, cutting the deficit to one in the bottom half when Hudson Allen delivered an RBI single to make it 12-11.

Down to their final three outs in the ninth, the Falcons found a way to extend the game. McGwire Turner reached and later scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Caleb Karll, tying the game at 12-12 and forcing extras.

After Mitchell Rhodes worked a scoreless top of the 10th, Montevallo completed the comeback in stunning fashion. With the bases loaded and two outs, Evan Radford launched a walk-off grand slam off the scoreboard in right field, sealing the 16-12 victory.
