MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo baseball team erased a 6-2 deficit and surged late, using a five-run eighth inning to rally past Shorter, 10-6, Tuesday afternoon at Kermit A. Johnson Field at Bob Riesener Stadium.
Shorter opened the scoring with a leadoff single and a wild pitch to take a 1-0 lead, but Montevallo responded immediately. Ian Cartwright started the bottom half with a double, and McGwire Turner followed with a two-run home run to center to give the Falcons a 2-1 advantage.
The Hawks answered in the second, plating three runs to reclaim a 4-2 lead, and added two more on a pair of RBI singles in the fourth to stretch the margin to 6-2.
Montevallo began its comeback in the fifth when Cartwright connected on a solo home run to left, cutting the deficit to 6-3. The Falcons kept the pressure on in the sixth as Hudson Allen doubled and later scored on an RBI single from Mason Woolever to make it 6-4.
Turner came through again in the seventh, launching his second home run of the game to pull Montevallo within one at 6-5.
The Falcons completed the comeback in the eighth with a decisive five-run frame. Woolever came around to score on a squeeze bunt by Joel Chandler to tie the game, before Cartwright delivered an RBI double to put Montevallo in front, 7-6. Dominic Maldet followed with a two-run double to extend the lead, and Caleb Karll added an RBI single to cap the inning and make it 10-6.
Landon Alton sealed the victory with a dominant ninth inning, retiring the side in order to secure Montevallo's third come-from-behind win in its last four games.
