Falcons Split Friday Twin Bill at Union

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Montevallo baseball team split Friday's GSC doubleheader against Union, taking the opener by a 9-6 final before falling 2-1 in extra innings in the nightcap at Fesmire Field.

Game 1 | Montevallo 9, Union 6

Montevallo jumped out early and never relinquished control in the series opener, using a three-run first inning to set the tone. Ian Cartwright reached to begin the game and later scored on an error before Evan Radford delivered a two-run homer to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead.

Union responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and eventually trimmed the deficit to 3-2, but Montevallo answered with a two-run homer from McGwire Turner in the third before adding on in the fourth. Hudson Allen doubled and came home on an RBI single from Mason Woolever to push the lead to 6-4.

The Falcons created separation in the seventh inning. Caleb Karll drove in a run with a single before Allen blasted a two-run homer to extend the advantage to 9-4.

Union threatened late, scoring once in both the seventh and eighth innings, but the Montevallo bullpen held firm. Mitchell Rhodes closed out the ninth to secure the 9-6 victory and earn his fourth save of the season.

Game 2 | Montevallo 1, Union 2 (10 inn.)

The nightcap turned into a pitcher's duel. Union struck first with a run in the opening inning, but Montevallo answered in the third as Ian Cartwright drove in Dominic Maldet with an RBI single to even the score at 1-1.

From there, both pitching staffs took over. Montevallo starter Matthew Bullard was strong, allowing just one run over 5.1 innings while striking out seven. The Falcons' bullpen combined to keep Union off the board, sending the game to extra innings.

In the 10th, the Bulldogs capitalized on a leadoff baserunner and an error before plating the winning run later in the frame.
