CLEVELAND, Miss. – The No. 20 Montevallo softball team earned an, 8-1, victory over Delta State in the series opener on Thursday evening.
Taylor Lloyd had a solid outing in the circle, earning her 21st victory of the season and 19th complete game. The senior allowed one run and struck out three in seven innings of work.
Montevallo looked to strike first, as Taylor Rogers singled and Emma Hawkins walked to put two runners on with no outs in the top of the first inning. Becca Benton followed that up with an RBI-single to score Rogers, putting the Falcons in front 1-0. Makayla Peters added a sac-fly that scored Hawkins, while Benton advanced to third and ultimately scored on the throw to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Falcons continued to push in the top of the second, as Kiley Christopher singled and Rogers hit her sixth home run of the year to stretch the Montevallo lead to 5-0.
Delta State got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, plating a run to cut the deficit to 5-1.
The Falcons responded in the top of the fifth, as Rogers hit her second home run of the day. Bentlee Stiner added a solo home run in the top of the sixth, stretching the Montevallo lead to 7-1.
Benton recorded her second RBI of the game in the top of the seventh, hitting an RBI-groundout to score Hawkins, putting the Falcons ahead 8-1.
The Lady Statesmen singled to open the top of the seventh, but Lloyd recorded three consecutive outs to secure the Montevallo, 8-1, victory.
