MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo baseball team closed out its midweek slate in style Tuesday night, defeating Columbus State 8-5 at Kermit A. Johnson Field at Bob Riesener Stadium.
Columbus State struck first with a two-run double in the opening inning, but the Falcons answered quickly. Back-to-back walks to begin the bottom of the first set up a sacrifice fly from Hollon Brock to put Montevallo on the board, and an infield single by Evan Radford evened the score at 2-2.
Montevallo took its first lead in the second inning on a sacrifice fly from Ian Cartwright, before Brock delivered the big swing, a two-run homer to center field, to extend the advantage to 5-2.
The Cougars responded with two runs in the fourth to cut the deficit to one, but the Falcons added insurance in the fifth on an RBI groundout from Radford to make it 6-4.
McGwire Turner provided a spark in the seventh, leading off the inning with his 10th home run of the season. Later in the frame, Hudson Allen drove in another run with an RBI double into the left field corner, stretching the lead to 8-4. Columbus State managed a run in the eighth, but Mitchell Rhodes sealed the victory in the ninth, retiring the side in order on just seven pitches to earn his team-leading fifth save of the season.
