MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Prior to Montevallo baseball's 8-5 victory over Columbus State on Tuesday night, Montevallo Athletics paused to honor the life and legacy of Johnny Holsombeck, recognizing his enduring impact on the university and its athletic programs.
As part of Tuesday night's tribute, members of Holsombeck's family were invited onto the field for a ceremonial first pitch. During the pregame ceremony, the athletic department also presented a $26,000 contribution to the Johnny Holsombeck UM Athletics Fund, further strengthening its ability to provide meals and community-building events. The evening also served as the Johnny Holsombeck Cookout, with $1 hot dogs helping highlight Holsombeck's commitment to community and bringing fans together at the ballpark.
Holsombeck joined the Montevallo community in 2012 after a successful career in the restaurant industry, where he owned and operated Double Play Sports Grill on Main Street. A graduate of Jacksonville State University with a degree in recreation management, Holsombeck was widely known for his warm personality, generous spirit, and unwavering commitment to serving others.
A passionate supporter of youth development and community engagement, Holsombeck was a strong advocate for the Boys and Girls Club and an enthusiastic supporter of youth sports. His connection to Montevallo Athletics was especially meaningful, as he frequently provided meals for student-athletes, coaches, and staff.
In recognition of his lasting contributions, the University of Montevallo
Athletic Department established the Johnny Holsombeck UM Athletics Fund, which continues his tradition of supporting team meals and cookouts for Falcon student-athletes.
"Johnny was a selfless individual who poured his heart into our student-athletes," said Vice President of Athletics and Special Programs
Mark Richard. "He would provide team meals whenever needed. He truly cared about Montevallo and our athletic programs."
