MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The women's soccer team has had a string of hard luck losses as of late. Unfortunately for the Falcons, Wednesday night's 3-2 overtime loss to the Clayton State Lakers may have been the toughest one yet.
The game started with numerous quality chances for each team. Montevallo, though, was the first to cash in. At 10:49, Nicole Johnston blasted one from way outside the box that found its way to the back of the net to put Clayton State in an early 1-0 hole.
Not too long after Johnston's strike, the Falcons extended their lead. Paige Scott recorded her third goal of the season when she was able to get a foot on a loose ball after it had been knocked around after a corner kick. The 2-0 lead would hold up until halftime.
Montevallo held on to their two goal advantage for the majority of the half, but Clayton was able to chip away at the deficit at 72:21, when a cluster of bodies surrounded the ball following a corner kick and snuck one past Taylor Kerr. Lois Edvardsson got credit for the goal.
Edvardsson would again strike at 89:01. Jahmela Williams fed her a beautiful ball on a cross and Edvardsson sent the game into overtime with an emphatic last minute goal.
It would not take long for overtime to decide a winner, as Denisha Paskell, the Peach Belt Conference's leading goal scorer, scored the golden goal for the Lakers. She used her speed to elude Falcon defenders and went top shelf for the win.
The women's soccer team hits the road this Saturday, Oct. 5, when they travel to Greenwood, S.C. to take on Lander. The game will start at noon.
