Falcons race past Stillman College in 80-65 road victory

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – University of Montevallo junior Ed'Lexus Collier scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Falcons to a 80-65 win over Stillman College on the road Nov. 21 at Birthright Alumni Hall.

All five starters finished in double figures for the Falcons, with Collier leading the way as he finished 8-of-12 from the floor in the victory. Collier also grabbed seven rebounds.

Montevallo (3-0) shot 60 percent from the floor in the win, including 46 percent from beyond the arc.

Junior Troran Brown added 16 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field while dishing out a team-high five assists. Fellow junior Da-Juan Cooper contributed 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting while sharing the team lead with seven rebounds. Junior Shykeem Jackson finished with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc to go along with four assists, while senior Orlando Brazier chipped in 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor.

Juniors Larry Slaughter and Silas Mills chipped in seven points and two points, respectively, off the bench.

Junior Darius Stowers grabbed three rebounds and handed out two assists in 15 minutes in his first action of the season.

The Falcons jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the game's opening minutes, with Collier providing a highlight dunk and a 3-pointer in the first minute of the game.

Stillman responded with a 8-0 run of its own, tying the game on a tip in by Stanley Magee with 16:02 remaining in the first half.

Montevallo came back with a 18-8 run, taking its largest lead in the opening half following a dunk by Collier with 7:16 left in the half, which gave the Falcons a 26-16 advantage.

The Tigers closed the half with a 18-9 run before Brown drained a jumper at the buzzer to send the Falcons into the locker room at halftime with a 37-34 lead.

Montevallo opened the second half with a 9-2 run to push its lead back to double digits, 47-36, following a jumper by Cooper with 17:04 remaining in the game.

Stillman managed to trim the deficit to seven points midway through the second half, with a layup by Robert Langham cutting the Falcons' lead to 57-50 with 10:32 remaining in the game.

However, the Falcons responded with a 11-2 run, capped with back-to-back 3-pointers by Jackson, to put the game away.

The Falcons will return to action Saturday, Nov. 23 with a non-conference game against Carver Bible College.

Tip-off at Trustmark Arena is set for 3:30 p.m.
