PENSACOLA, Fla. - After losing their first two games of the season, the University of Montevallo women's basketball team entered Friday's matchup with Southwest Baptist on a two game winning streak with an opportunity to move their record above .500. Despite strong performances by Jacquelyn Thompson and Shay Bonner and a remarkable 38 point game from Taylor Beverly, the Falcons fell to the Bearcats 86-82 and are now 2-3 this year.
For the most part, the first half was a back and forth, closely contested 20 minutes, but Montevallo started to pull away towards the end of the half. At one point, the Falcons led by 11 and ended up with a five point advantage when both teams went to the locker rooms.
In the second half, Montevallo was either in the lead or tied with Southwest Baptist for the first 16:45. However, the Bearcats obtained the lead when it mattered most and held off the Falcons for the 86-82 win.
Sophomore Thompson had five three pointers in the game, converting on nearly half of her 11 attempts from behind the arc. Thompson entered the game tied for fifth in the Peach Belt Conference in three pointers made with nine.
Senior Bonner has now scored double digits in all five of the games this season with her 12 points performance on Friday.
Beverly recorded a season high in points, dropping 38 on the Bearcats, while shooting a phenomenal 70% from the floor. This impressive offensive outburst is just the latest accomplishment for the junior from Brandon, Miss. who has already recorded a triple double and been named Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week during this young season.
Thompson, Bonner, and Beverly accounted for all but 14 of the Falcons' points during the game.
Montevallo will be back in action tomorrow, November 30th. They will face the loser of the West Florida/Claflin game.
