MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of North Georgia women's basketball team entered Wednesday night's contest as the only Peach Belt team yet to suffer a conference loss. The University of Montevallo Falcons fought valiantly against the Peach Belt powerhouse, but ultimately fell by the score of 76-62.
Montevallo (3-9, 0-5) found itself in an early hole. The Falcons were unable to do much against the stout Nighthawk defense, but were able to back into the game. At one point, North Georgia held a 28-14 lead, but Montevallo went on a 13-5 run and cut the deficit to just five.
North Georgia (10-1, 4-0) would get a last second three-pointer to take back momentum and go into halftime with an eight point advantage.
In the second half, the Nighthawks again got off to a fast start, but the Falcons stayed within striking distance. With just 8:51 to play in regulation, Shay Bonner fought through a foul to make a layup, converted the following free throw and had the Falcons within six points of the conference leader.
This would, however, be as close as Montevallo would come to taking the lead in the game. North Georgia's steady attack closed out the contest, and the Nighthawks left Trustmark Arena with a 76-62 win.
The Peach Belt Conference's leading scorer, Montevallo's Taylor Beverly, continued to rack up impressive numbers. The junior from Brandon, Mississippi led the Falcons with 19 points.
Bonner chipped in 13 points and shot 50% from the field. She also added to her conference lead in steals, as she created five turnovers in an impressive defensive effort.
Freshman Bre'ana Singleton led the team in minutes (31), providing a spark off the bench. She also led the team in assists, dishing out six helpers. Kaylin Foreman also played quality minutes off the bench, scoring 11 points in 17 minutes of action.
The University of Montevallo women's basketball team has a quick turnaround, as they will be back in action this Saturday, January 11th. The Falcons will tip off with the USC Aiken Pacers at 1:30 p.m. inside Trustmark Arena.
