AIKEN, S.C. – In a closely contested match, the University of Montevallo women's soccer team fell to the USC Aiken Pacers 4-3 in overtime. The Falcons scored with less than two minutes to play to send the match into the extra frame.
It was a high scoring start to the game, with the Pacers' leading goal scorer, Hannah Allison, putting the ball in the back of the net at 12:18, taking a pass from Megan Smits. It was the eighth goal of the year for Allison, which ties her for sixth most in the Peach Belt Conference.
Aiken went up by two goals just a few minutes later, with the scoring pair for the opening goal reversing roles. Smits scored her fifth goal of the year, while Allison got her third assist of the season, heading the ball to Smits.
Montevallo responded, quickly cutting the lead in half at 17:39. Jade Pennock scored her sixth year of the goal unassisted on a long run. Pennock leads the Falcons in goals and points this season.
The remainder of the half lacked any goals, so the home team held on to their 2-1 lead at the break. UM held an advantage in corner kicks in the first half, 5-4.
The Pacers regained their two goal advantage at 57:56. Smits scored her second goal of the contest, and Allison would again get the assist. Akeyla Furbert also was credited with a helper on the goal.
Pennock and the Falcons struck back in the 68th minute. The Pontefract, England native scored her second goal of the game and seventh of the year to make it a 3-2 game. Emma Greenwood had the assist; it was the second straight game that Greenwood assisted on a Pennock tally.
With under two minutes to play in regulation, Montevallo still trailed by a goal. Michaela Graber, though, was able to send the game to overtime, scoring her first goal of her sophomore season. Pennock recorded her fifth point of the day on the assist.
Unfortunately for the Falcons, the extra time would be brief. USC Aiken's Jenna Beauregard scored the golden goal on a long, unassisted shot.
Montevallo outshot USC Aiken in the second half.
The Falcons (1-8-1, 1-6-1) will hit the road for a non-conference match against West Alabama this Wednesday, October 22.
