MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women's soccer team squared off with the Columbus State Cougars on Wednesday night. Coming into the contest, the Cougars were ranked seventh in the country. Columbus State was able to get the win against UM, 5-1.
Early in the game, the best chance came on the Falcons' side, as Jade Pennock found a streaking Julie Heltne who fired on the left side of the net. Maylyn Parsons, who had a GAA of .59 entering the game, lived up to her impressive statistics by making the stop and keeping the game scoreless.
Off a corner kick at 19:56, the Cougars broke through and took a 1-0 lead. Taylor Marks had a picture perfect setup for Nicole Corcione. Corcione headed in her fourth goal of the year.
Columbus State's leading scorer, Kelsey Pelletier, got on the board at 24:09. Pelletier was awarded a penalty kick after being taken down in the box. Montevallo keeper Katie Pearson stopped the PK, but could do little to save Pelletier's second attempt off the rebound. For Pelletier, the goal was her eighth of the year.
The Cougars would again get a penalty kick just a few minutes later after a hand ball in the box by the home team. Mandy Janowitz buried the kick for her fifth goal of the year.
Coming out of the half, CSU was able to put up another goal just minutes into the second frame. Corcione scored her second of the night and fifth of the year at 48:58.
The PBC leading Cougars put up their fifth goal of the night at 69:56. Stephanie Kolwicz netted her fourth of the season, while Kiana Nicholson recorded her third assist of the year.
The Falcons refused to be shutout, though, as Pennock scored her eighth goal of the season. Pennock received a nice ball from Heltne and chipped the ball past an attacking Meosha Hatcher.
Montevallo drops to 1-11-1 on the season after the 5-1 loss. Pennock led the way with four shots on the evening.
Senior Day for the Falcons is this Saturday, November 1. The ceremony will take place after the team takes on Young Harris at 1 p.m.
