MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo baseball team swept a doubleheader with the University of West Georgia in a season-opening doubleheader Feb. 1 at Kermit A. Johnson Field.
The Falcons erased a three-run deficit in the season opener to defeat the Wolves 15-12. Montevallo overcame a seven-run deficit in the nightcap in a 14-8 win over West Georgia.
Montevallo (2-0) will host the Wolves in the third and final game of the series Sunday, Feb. 2. First pitch is set for 10 a.m.
"I'm really proud of the fight and the resiliency we had all day," said Montevallo coach Chandler Rose. "We certainly didn't pitch or play defense very well but offensively we did a great job and came up with some really clutch hits. This early you're still learning a lot about about your team and the new guys. We had several older guys have big days and saw a lot of good things from some new guys. Tomorrow is a quick turnaround and we need to come ready to go."
Montevallo plated six runs in the bottom half of the first inning in the season opener to take an early lead before the Wolves scored four runs in the fourth inning and five runs in the sixth inning, which gave West Georgia a 11-8 lead.
The Falcons scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the lead for good in the 15-12 victory.
True freshman Taylor Korosec (1-0) picked up the win in his collegiate debut after giving up just one earned run with a strikeout and a walk in one inning in relief. Sophomore Cody Hughes earned his first save after allowing just one hit with a walk and a strikeout in two innings in relief.
Junior Zack Willoughby led the Falcons at the plate as he finished 4-for-5 with a double and drove in four runs.
Senior Will Fulmer finished 3-for-3 at the plate while driving in three runs and scoring three runs. Sophomore Brandon Marshall went 2-for-4, which included a three-run double in the seventh inning, while driving in a team-high five runs.
Montevallo scored 10 runs in the seventh inning to overcome and early 8-1 deficit in a 14-8 win in the nightcap.
Redshirt freshman Dustin Cowart (1-0) earned his first win after pitching four perfect innings in relief with three strikeouts.
Senior Jackson Slaid led the Falcons at the plate as he finished 3-for-5 with a solo homer while driving in two runs and scoring two runs.
Junior Matthew Haskins went 2-for-5 at the plate and drove in two runs. Pablo Martell finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a double while driving in three runs. Willoughby and Fulmer, who drove in two runs and scored two runs, each had a solo homer in the nightcap.
