BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Montevallo baseball team took the field Thursday afternoon, squaring off with Miles College. The Falcons continued their hot start to the season, defeating the Golden Bears by the final score of 12-4.
Montevallo started off the game with an offensive outburst, beginning with Will Fulmer's leadoff single. After Matthew Haskins drew a walk, back-to-back singles by Jackson Slaid and Vinny Rodriguez gave Montevallo a 2-0 lead before a single out was recorded. Dane Hutcheon would also drive home a run in the inning.
After Miles responded with three runs of their own in the second, Slaid put the Falcons back on top in the third with an absolute bomb to left field for his fourth home run of the season.
The Golden Bears again even the score in the fourth, but their fourth run of the day would prove to be their last, while the Falcons were far from done scoring.
With one out in the top of the sixth, Fulmer hit the second Montevallo home run of the afternoon, again putting a ball over the left field fence.
In the seventh, the Falcons would add four more runs and would get an additional three insurance runs in the eighth on their way to a 12-4 victory.
Tanner Koch started the game for Montevallo, giving four solid innings of work. He allowed four runs on four hits and struck out one.
He was relieved by Taylor Korosec, who picked up the win for the Falcons. Korosec (2-0) threw three scoreless innings, only allowing two hits.
Joey Hume and Nash Osborne pitched the eighth and ninth innings for Montevallo, respectively. Hume struck out two, Osborne struck out one, and neither allowed a hit.
In addition to their homeruns, Fulmer and Slaid had fantastic days at the plate. Fulmer went 4-for-6 on the day, scoring three runs and driving in two more. Slaid went 3-for-5, with two runs and four RBIs.
Zach Willoughby went 2-for-4 on the afternoon. His triple to deep center field led off the four run seventh inning for the Falcons.
In all, the Falcons had 17 hits and drew seven walks.
Montevallo will return to conference play this weekend, traveling to Pembroke, N.C. to take on the Braves in a weekend series.
There is a doubleheader Saturday, with the first game starting at noon (CST). The first pitch Sunday will be at 3:00 p.m. (CST).
