MONTEVALLO, Ala. - On senior day, the lone senior on the University of Montevallo women's basketball team had a game to remember. Shay Bonner was just one point shy of her career-high, scoring 26 points en route to a Falcon win over the Bobcats of Georgia College, 80-71.
In a back and forth first half that saw the score tied on seven different occasions, Montevallo started to pull away late in the half and went to the locker room with a six point lead.
The star of the first half for the Falcons was undoubtedly Bonner. She had 17 points on 66.7% shooting in 15 minutes of action. Her hard-nosed style of play was rewarded in the opening half, earning her six trips to the free throw line.
Montevallo's lead would be challenged in the second half, with Georgia College cutting the lead to just a single point on three separate occasions.
However, the Falcons refused to let the Bobcats ruin their senior day festivities, never allowing the Bobcats to overtake the lead.
Montevallo closed the game on a 15-7 run, earning an 80-71 victory.
The Falcons avenged a previous loss this season against the Bobcats with solid, consistent shooting. In each half, the Falcons shot 50% from the field, shooting 30 times and making 15 of them each time.
There was also a decisive advantage on the boards for Montevallo, outrebounding Georgia College 49-36.
Taylor Beverly scored the second most points of her career Saturday afternoon, finishing with a game-high 33. She was also the only player in the game to record double digit rebounds, grabbing 16 boards.
Bonner had a fantastic game. The senior finished with 26 points on 9-14 shooting. She also made seven of her nine free throws. Her nine rebounds were the second most in the game and tied a season-high for Bonner.
Combined, Beverly and Bonner had 59 of Montevallo's 80 points.
Sophomore Jacquelyn Thompson chipped in nine points and had four assists for the Falcons.
Due to the winter storms of a month ago, Montevallo will play a makeup game against Young Harris tomorrow, February 23rd.
Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m. It is the last regular season home game for the Falcons.
