MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women's basketball team fell to visiting Young Harris College 60-57 in a Peach Belt Conference contest Feb. 23 at Trustmark Arena.
The Mountain Lions outrebounded the Falcons 53-42 in the first of two meetings between the teams in the next seven days.
Senior Shay Bonner led the Falcons (8-17 overall, 5-13 in Peach Belt Conference) as she recorded the second double-double of her career with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Junior Taylor Beverly, who surpassed the Falcons' single-season scoring record in their NCAA Division II era one day ago, added 14 points and 13 rebounds as she posted her 17th double-double of the season. Beverly is now just 21 points shy of eclipsing the Falcons' career scoring record in their NCAA Division II era.
Sophomore Jacquelyn Thompson contributed 12 points. Fellow sophomore Katie Colson added eight points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Jerrisa Green contributed three points.
A layup by Colson gave the Falcons a 13-8 lead with 12:41 remaining in the first half. The Mountain Lions responded with a 11-6 run to tie the game at 19-19 following a jumper by Shereese Williams with 9:20 remaining in the opening half.
The Falcons closed the first half with a 7-4 run to carry a 31-27 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Montevallo extended its lead to as many as seven points early in the second half following a pair of free throws by Bonner with 17:51 remaining in the game, which gave the Falcons a 38-31 lead.
Young Harris responded with a 11-1 run to take a 42-39 lead following a 3-pointer by Keta Robinette with 13:56 remaining in the game. The Falcons came back with a 12-3 run of their own, capped with a 3-pointer by Bonner, which gave Montevallo a 51-45 lead with 10:01 remaining in the game.
Young Harris chipped away at the Falcons' lead, tying the game at 52-52 with a jumper by Ladondra Johnson with 3:25 left in the game. Beverly knocked down a pair of free throws with 1:15 left in the game to give Montevallo a 57-56 lead.
However, a jumper by Johnson just seconds later gave the Mountain Lions the lead for good as they closed the game on a 4-0 run.
The Falcons return to action Saturday, March 1 as they close out the season on the road in a rematch against the Mountain Lions on the campus of Young Harris College.
Tip-off is set for 12:30 p.m.
