YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. - University of Montevallo junior Taylor Beverly broke the Falcons' career scoring record in the Division II era on Saturday afternoon. Beverly broke the record by one point in the season finale, which Montevallo lost to Young Harris, 64-50.
In the game, Montevallo fell behind early and was never able to recover. The Falcons stayed within striking distance of the Mountain Lions, but were never able to overtake the Peach Belt powerhouse.
The story of the day for Montevallo was Beverly. Having already broken her own record for single-season points in Montevallo's Division II era, Beverly started the game just 21 points away from breaking the career record. This feat is impressive on its own, but it's even more remarkable given the fact that Beverly is just a junior.
In the first half, Beverly scored 10 points on 50% shooting. She also had two blocks and grabbed eight rebounds.
Needing 12 points in the second half to break the record, Beverly continued to lead the team in scoring. She scored exactly 12 points in the final half and broke the record on a layup with just 1:16 remaining in the game.
The new Division II scoring record owned by Beverly is 1,353 points.
Overall, Beverly had 22 points. She also grabbed 14 boards.
She ends the season as the second leading scorer in the Peach Belt Conferece and the conference's leading rebounder.
Sophomore Jacquelyn Thompson had six points in the game, shooting 40% from three-point land. She ends the year in second place in the PBC in made three-pointers. She also had four assists to lead the team.
