PEMBROKE, N.C. – The first conference match of the year for the University of Montevallo women's soccer team unfortunately ended in a double-overtime loss. The Falcons hung tough with the UNC Pembroke Braves, but eventually fell in extra time, 2-1.
The Braves got on the board exactly 27 minutes into the contest. The tally came off a free kick just outside the box. The ball deflected off both Montevallo keeper Katie Pearson and the post before being put into the back of the net by Katie Watkins. Courtney Crump got the assist on the goal.
Despite a few good runs by the Falcons, getting a solid shot on goal proved to be an elusive task for the remainder of the first half. UNC Pembroke maintained its 1-0 lead when the teams broke for halftime.
At 69:07, a penalty on the Braves in the box led to a Montvallo penalty kick. For the all-important opportunity, the Falcons turned to Jade Pennock. Pennock, a junior from Pontefract, England, scored on the PK and evened the game up at one.
That goal was Pennock's second of the year. In two games, she has both of Montevallo's goals.
There would be no more goals in regulation, and the Falcons and Braves would need overtime.
In extra time, UNC Pembroke would be victorious. Courtney Crump, who had the assist on the Braves' first goal of the game, scored the game-winner in the second overtime. With Amber Watkins on the assist, Crump scored the golden goal with just 3:26 showing on the clock.
Following their first conference game of the season, the Falcons will go back to non-conference play this week. The University of West Florida will make the trip to Montevallo this Tuesday, September 23. That match will start at 5 p.m.
